If your middle school changes sections to accommodate different specials mid year, we're in the same boat. This can be an exciting but challenging transition. I find it helpful to get into my September mindset. This includes establishing rules and expectations, conducting orientations, understanding readers' interests, and refreshing student’s understanding of making the most of our online catalog. The biggest challenge is behavioral expectations with students who have already grown comfortable, so I make sure those expectations are clear from the outset.
Setting Rules and Expectations:
- Begin by clearly communicating the purpose of the new sections and the expected behavior within the library. Emphasize the importance of respect for both resources and fellow students. I make sure rules and procedures are clear, and reinforce the understanding that this is a research skills class in which they earn a grade.
- Establish library etiquette rules, such as maintaining a quiet atmosphere, returning books on time, and handling materials with care. This ensures a conducive environment for everyone.
- Clearly outline borrowing limits and due dates. Encourage responsible borrowing to foster a sense of accountability among students.
Orientation Procedures and Library Tour:
- Conduct a comprehensive orientation session to introduce students to the new sections. Explain the themes, genres, or subjects covered and highlight the benefits of exploring these diverse materials.
- Take students on a library tour, emphasizing the location of new sections, designated quiet areas, and important resources. Familiarize them with the organization of books and other materials.
- Include interactive sessions during the orientation to engage students. This could involve book talks, discussions about favorite genres, and an opportunity for students to express their expectations from the new sections.
- Administer a readers' interest survey to understand the preferences and tastes of the student body. Include questions about favorite genres, authors, and topics to tailor the library's collection to their interests. I also include space for their specific new book requests to be purchased for our collection.
- Establish a feedback mechanism for ongoing communication. Encourage students to share their thoughts and recommendations for future additions to the library's collection. I use email with my students.
How to Use the Online Catalog:
- Provide hands-on training on how to use the online catalog. Walk students through the process of searching for books, placing holds, and checking availability.
- Highlight the availability of digital resources in the catalog, such as e-books and audiobooks. Show students how to access these materials for a more versatile reading experience.
- Emphasize how the online catalog can be integrated into classroom learning. Encourage teachers to collaborate with the library to enhance the academic experience for students.
Launching new sections in the middle school library mid-year is an exciting journey that promises to enrich the reading and learning experience for our students. By establishing clear rules, conducting engaging orientations, understanding readers' interests, and harnessing the power of the online catalog, we can create a library environment that fosters curiosity, exploration, and a lifelong love for learning. As we embark on this venture together, let's celebrate the joy of discovery and the endless possibilities that lie within the pages of a good book.
