Congratulations on your new role as a school librarian! This is an exciting time, and you're about to embark on a rewarding journey. As a first-year school librarian, you might be feeling a mix of emotions - from excitement to nervousness. This post is designed to offer valuable advice and tips to help you navigate your first year and set yourself up for success.
Tip 1: Build Relationships
Get to know your students, teachers, and staff. Attend school events, grade and subject level PLC’s, join committees, and volunteer for projects. Building relationships will help you understand the school culture and establish a strong foundation for your library program.
Tip 2: Explore Your Library
Familiarize yourself with the library's collection, technology, and resources. Learn about the library's history, policies, and procedures. Hold off on weeding heavily until you know your collection better.
Tip 3: Develop a Lesson Plan Template
Create a template to help you plan engaging lessons and ensure consistency.
Tip 4: Stay Organized
Use tools like calendars, to-do lists, and project management apps to stay on top of tasks and deadlines.
Tip 5: Seek Mentorship
Find a mentor who can offer guidance, support, and encouragement.
Tip 6: Stay Current
Stay up-to-date with the latest trends, technologies, and best practices in school librarianship.
Tip 7: Prioritize Self-Care
Don't forget to take care of yourself - physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Tip 8: Make Friends with your Main Office Staff
From purchasing and ordering procedures to prioritizing necessary repairs, these folks will be your best friends.
Tip 9: Always Get the Cataloging and Processing done for you
Paying a minimal fee (some book jobbers offer this for free) for cataloging and processing will save you tons of precious time.
Tip 10: Don’t Reinvent the Wheel
In your first year, you may find yourself overwhelmed. Online resources such as Common Sense Media for digital citizenship, Teachingbooks.net for lesson plans and resources, my website, and TPT for free and low cost resources can save you time and sanity!
Your first year as a school librarian is just the beginning of an incredible journey. Remember to be patient, flexible, and kind to yourself. You got this! Feel free to reach out with any questions.
Best of luck in your new role!
